herbalism and tea-making through the eyes of a novice
My Journey
Start small. I have always thought herbalism was fascinating but I also found it intimidating. I was confronted with too many overwhelming questions that led me to blow off my interest in herbalism. It wasn’t until recently that I delved into it.
My interest is mainly in tea making. I made a decision to gift my loved ones homemade loose leaf blends for the holidays which led me to buy lots of loose herbs. I read Rosemary Gladstar’s books and found recipes that I loved. I continue to look in her books for recipes and inspiration.
Not until recently did I decide to start making my own blends. While I am not sure if they actually taste good, it is more so the ritual of drinking these beautiful and aromatic herbal blends that I have developed a passion for.
I am in no way an expert on tea making. This blog is an outlet for me to share my recipes and tips on herbalism and tea making.
Breast and Lymph Blend
This blend was made with lots of inspiration from Rosemary Gladstar. I wanted to combine her Breast Health and Lymph Congestion blends to make something that could be useful for both.
Sleepy time blend
Giving yourself the time and space to get good sleep is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Sleeping well is personalized and needs vary from person to person, but I believe sleeping rituals can help wind down the body and promote rest. Some subtle and not so subtle examples of this are not drinking coffee past a certain time, staying off electronics past a certain time, keeping electronics out of your bedroom, making your bed, taking a bath, or meditating. This tea blend is designed to be one of those rituals.
This tea blend incorporates herbs that are thought to be beneficial for sleeping. Hop blossoms are thought to be beneficial for sleep because of their effect on GABA receptors. Skullcap is thought to be beneficial with reducing anxiety. I knew I wanted to incorporate these herbs into this blend. Other herbs in this blend include spearmint, peppermint, lemon balm, chamomile, and lavender.
Sip this tea before bed while doing whatever else your body needs to relax.
Tea blend for urinary health
I have always been one to prioritize urinary tract health, mainly because I am deathly afraid of UTIs. I really wanted to concoct a tea blend that supports urinary tract health. I did not intend for this blend to be a treatment for an active UTI, rather a blend that helps keep the urinary tract healthy and clear of infection.
I used a base of raspberry leaf and lemon balm for a floral flavor and to balance out some of the bitter herbs that were used. I was unsure how this blend would taste because it incorporates many herbs that I was unsure of tastewise, such as uva ursi, calendula, cornsilk, horsetail, and dried cranberries. The blend turned out to be surprisingly good! The tea is very floral and light, making it perfect for the transition from winter to spring. This blend would work either hot or iced.
butterfly pea flower skin detox tea
This tea blend is the first original tea blend I made, so it arguably has way too many ingredients. I may have gotten ahead of myself, but it tastes really good. The focus of this tea is skin cleansing. I researched various herbs that are said to be good for skin and combined these herbs with some tasty herbs to make something that is both beneficial for skin and tasty. The result is a gorgeous blue-hued tea that can be enjoyed anytime of the day. Enjoy!
